Lung cancer is the second most common cancer in the U.S. and the leading cause of cancer death among men and women. Approximately 87% of all lung cancers are non small cell lung cancer diagnosis. While cigarette smoking is the primary cause of most lung cancers, accounting for about 87% of all cases, exposure to secondhand smoke, radon gas, and asbestos are also contributing factors. Early symptoms of lung cancer may include shortness of breath, coughing up blood, and fatigue, as well as these commonly overlooked lung cancer symptoms:

1. Hoarseness or change in voice
Hoarseness or change in voice is one of the lung cancer symptoms that are often overlooked. This is because many people do not think this is a cancer symptom. However, it is important to remember that cancer can cause changes in the voice. If you have noticed that your voice has become hoarse, or if it has changed, it is important to visit a doctor. Your doctor can determine if cancer is the cause of your voice changes and may be able to recommend additional tests to determine if cancer is present.

2. Blood clots
Blood clots can be a symptom of lung cancer that’s also often overlooked. This can be caused by other conditions, such as heart disease or stroke. However, it is important to see your doctor if you have a history of blood clots or develop them for no apparent reason. They can block blood and oxygen flow to your lungs, leading to serious complications.

3. Clubbed fingers
Clubbed fingers are not a symptom that is commonly associated with lung cancer. However, it can be an early sign of the disease, and it is important to be aware of this symptom so that you can seek medical attention if you notice your fingers have widened or become club shaped at the tips. Clubbed fingers can often indicate a respiratory problem, so you need to contact your doctor immediately if you show signs of finger clubbing.

4. Balance issues
Lung cancer can also cause balance issues when the cancer causes the body to produce abnormal levels of hormones, which can, in turn, alter a person’s sense of balance. Additionally, cancer can cause brain changes, making it difficult to maintain balance. Treatment for this symptom may include physical therapy, medication, or a combination. If you notice any changes in your balance, please talk to your healthcare provider about how to address them.

5. Digestive problems
Several things can cause digestive problems, ranging from mild to severe. Lung cancer patients  may experience problems with digestion because of high levels of calcium in the blood, or hypercalcemia. Excessive calcium in the blood may cause digestive problems, like tummy aches, constipation, or nausea.

Many lung cancer symptoms are often overlooked. While some of these symptoms may seem minor, they can indicate a more serious problem. It is important to be aware of all the possible symptoms of lung cancer so that you can seek medical help as soon as possible if you experience any of them.
