Experts feel that eating disorders can be due to several factors, including genetics. There are studies carried out that suggest that a family history of eating disorders can be a cause. Personality traits can also be another major reason for the development of various types of eating disorders. In particular, personality traits like impulsivity, perfectionism, and neuroticism are associated with a greater risk of developing eating disorders.

There is a list of causes that are considered to lead to the development of eating disorders. These include being exposed to media promotion, skinny preferences of the culture, and the pressure of being thin. In recent years, experts have come to believe that the differences seen in the structure of the brain, as well as its biology, plays an important role in the development of eating disorders.

The two of the common types of eating disorders include:

1. Rumination disorder
A recently recognized type of eating disorder is rumination disorder. It is the condition in which an individual regurgitates the food that they have chewed and swallowed previously. They recheck it and thereafter they will either swallow it again or spit it out. Rumination mostly happens within the first thirty minutes after the meal. Reflux is a medical condition in which a person faces this type of problem making it different as compared to the rumination disorder wherein the activities are voluntarily done by the individual.

Such a type of eating disorder occurs in an individual when they are infants, children, or adults. In the case of infants, there is a possibility of developing this type of eating disorder when the infants are between 3 to 12 months. However, they mostly tend to disappear as the infant grows older. When rumination disorder develops in the case of adults and children, therapy and professional treatment are needed to solve the problem. If the problem does not get solved in the case of infants, this type of eating disorder can cause loss of weight and serious malnutrition which can be life-threatening. In the case of adults, this may limit the amount of food that the person consumes, especially when they are in public. It may result in excess loss of weight

2. Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID)
An old eating disorder has been given a new name and that is known as avoidant or restrictive food intake disorder. Avoidant or restrictive food intake disorder has replaced the feeding disorder of infancy and early childhood, which is a diagnosis that involved children who were below the age of seven. Although this type of eating disorder is generally seen to develop at the time of early childhood or infancy, it can last even when a person enters adulthood. It is found to develop in both males as well as in females. People having this type of eating disorder may face disrupted eating caused because of less interest in the food or distaste for some sort of temperatures, textures, colors, tastes, or smells. It is considered that this type of eating disorder affects the normal behavior of an individual.
